Come together to remember and celebrate: food, music, dance and children's workshops
On June 30 and July 1, Haarlem organizes the Keti Koti program for the fourth year, a commemoration and celebration of the abolition of slavery. On June 30, a commemorative gathering takes place in the Grote or St. Bavo Church led by Mariska de Jong, followed by the Anitri waka procession to PHIL, where a commemorative concert with Gershwin Bonevacia, James Oesi and Djuwa Mroivili takes place in the evening. On July 1, the Stadsschouwburg is dedicated to celebration with the educational youth documentary Kinderen van Mavungu, the shared meal moment Free Heri Heri, workshops, the dance performance Kromanti by Fawaka Studio and musical activities. The program focuses on commemorating the past, celebrating freedom and bringing the entire city together, with special attention to young people.
Club Kenau presents 'The Hero of Haarloheim' from August 6th, a family musical about the myth of Laurens Janszoon Coster, the legendary inventor of the printing press from Haarlem. In the medieval city of Haarloheim, regent Walewei introduces a book ban, causing all writings to be confiscated. Minstrels, bakers and children lose their sheet music, recipes and stories. Marianne, Walewei's sister, devises a trick to save the stories, while a knight searches for a true heroic deed. When Coster arrives with a revolutionary invention, it offers hope for Haarloheim. This sparkling summer comedy is performed on the forecourt of the Stadsschouwburg with live rock music, absurd humor and plenty of guitars. For convenience, visitors receive headphones, and it is recommended to bring a blanket and raincoat. In case of bad weather, the performance moves indoors.
Theatermaker Steef de Jong presents Offenbach's 19th-century operetta 'L'île de Tulipatan' as 'Tulip Town' on stage: an energetic, humorous production full of quick changes and gender-swapping. With top actors Ilse Warringa, Rop Verheijen, Daniel Cornelissen and Thor Braun and a live band, he creates a theatrical pop concert with spectacular sets and androgynous costumes. The story follows Prince Alexis and Hermosa who love each other despite their parents' plans, making a cheerful plea for authenticity and love. Offenbach's classical melodies receive fresh, sharp arrangements by Marijn van Prooijen that blend punk and operetta. The production is a collaboration between Stadsschouwburg Haarlem and Groots en Meeslepend.
